Types of Fire 🔥
Before learning how to put out a fire through a fire extinguisher let us learn what are the different type of Fires. In Sri lanka fire extinguishers are installed and are used commonly especially in offices and factories but the sad truth is most are not aware of the mechanism of how the fire extinguisher works. Not all fires are the same the ones that occurs in a kitchen cannot be put out in using a fire extinguisher that is used to put out a fire on an airplane engine. Fire can be classified in 4 formal classes
Class A - These are ordinary fires that we come across in our daily lives, such as burning paper, burning wood etc...
Class B - These are burning gasses or liquids.
Class C - This category consists of electrical fires
Class D - These are metals catching on fire and burning.

🧯Water Fire Extinguishers
These are water based fire extinguishers. It is a the most commonly used extinguisher and used to extinguished Class A fires. This fire extinguisher is used for fires of various organic matter including fabrics, textiles, coal, wood, cardboard, paper etc.. But as opposed to the popular understanding this type of water fire extinguisher should not be used on kitchen fires.
🧯Foam Fire Extinguishers
Foam fire extinguishers are generally used for Class B Fires & also could be used for Class A fires.
This extinguisher could be used to extinguish fires on all materials that could be put out using the water extinguisher and in addition this also can be used to extinguish fire from flammable liquids such as petrol & paint.
🧯Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers
The Dry powder fire extinguishers are also known as ABC extinguishers since these can be used for fires of Class A, Class B and Class C. There isa limitation for this extinguisher though, that is this is not recommended to use in enclosed area, since the powder can be inhaled in.
🧯Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers
Wet chemical fire extinguishers are used for fires involving the kitchen, especially the ones involving cooking oils and fats. This type of extinguishers are rather unique for the kitchen but also can be used for Class A fires. So this be could be classified as a unique kind of fire extinguisher for the kitchen.
🧯CO2 Chemical Fire Extinguishers
Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers are mainly used of electrical fires or class C fires. This extinguishers are the ones that are used at high risk areas of electrical shortage such as computer server rooms. Although this is used to put out Class C fire the CO2 fire extinguisher can also be used to bring under control fires of Class B.
